Duties and Responsibilities |
Reporting to the Associate Director for New Student Programs, the Assistant Director for First-Year Programs provides institutional leadership and support for
UNIV courses, first-year student and family communications, new student orientation, new student convocation, and other programs and initiatives that support new first-year and transfer students, foster a sense of belonging, and impact student success and retention.
The Assistant Director will:
- Manage UNIV 101, 102, and 201 course scheduling and instructor assignment process in collaboration with Student Academic Services, Registration and Records, and university partners.
- Support course administration, curriculum development, evaluation, and assessment for all UNIV first-year and transfer seminar courses.
- Collaborate with university partners to initiate, lead, and/or assist programs designed to support the onboarding, transition, and retention of first-year and transfer students.
- Oversee NSP student leader programming which includes the recruitment, training, and supervision of peer leaders who support UNIV courses and other first-year student engagement.
- Manage marketing and communications with first-year families, and coordinate evaluation and assessment efforts
- In collaboration with the Student Transitions and Academic Partnerships team and Residence Life, coordinate the logistics of Living Learning Communities.
- Teach sections of UNIV 101, 102, 112, and 201 each semester
- Support the recruitment, selection, training, supervision, and evaluation of graduate student workers to support first-year programming.
- Support the efforts of planning, implementing, and assessing new student orientation programs for first-year and transfer students and their families.
- Support NSP leader programming for new student orientation, which includes the recruitment, training, and supervision of orientation leaders.
- Collaborate on first-year student transition and success initiatives
- Represent New Student Programs on University committees as assigned; participate on internal and University-wide working groups and committees, as needed.
- Serve as liaison to Scholars Programs and Career Services in the Division of Student Success.
- Supporting programming and initiatives that fall under Student Transitions and Academic Partnerships (Tutorpalooza, Major/Minors Fair)
- Contribute to a positive team dynamic among staff and student leaders; contribute to collaboration across the university.
- In collaboration with the Student Transitions and Academic Partnerships team, coordinate the logistics of New Student Convocation.
- Participate in Student Academic Services signature programs, events, and activities, including but not limited to finals week proctoring and Undergraduate Admission open houses.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Education and/or Work Experience |
Master's Degree in higher education or related field and knowledge of learning and tutoring theory. Three years' experience. |
Qualifications |
- Bachelor's degree with at least three years of related professional experience required; master's degree preferred.
- Experience with first-year experience programming
- Experience supervising undergraduate student staff
- Experience with communications campaigns preferred
- Experience academically advising students preferred
- Experience teaching a first-year seminar preferred
- Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, flexibility, and problem-solving skills
- Demonstrated ability to effectively collaborate with University partners
- Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate (verbally and in writing) with faculty, staff, students, and parents/families
- Ability to embrace, promote, and articulate the University's Jesuit Catholic identity

Certificates/Credentials/Licenses |
Bachelor's degree with at least three years of related professional experience required; master's degree preferred. |
Computer Skills |
Proficient computer skills, including experience using student information systems, database management, and Microsoft 365 Office suite. Experience with university admission
CRM software (e.g., Slate) and assessment/evaluation platforms (e.g., Qualtrics, Campus Labs), and communications software, preferred. |
