About the role:

As the Director of Firmware Engineering you will lead R&D functions whose primary mission is to develop high quality firmware for Boston Scientific products. This organization is comprised of both implantable and Electrical Medical Equipment (EME) firmware engineering functions, including design, testing and advanced tools development activities. These functions are made up of a global engineering workforce with resources in the US, India and China.

Product development in this organization is performed using Agile methodologies so knowledge and experience using these methods is highly desired. Significant collaboration with functions within and outside of R&D is required to be successful in this role, as well as cross-divisional collaboration. People leadership and talent development are critical skills required in this role to create high performing functional teams and retain talent.

Firmware Engineering at Boston Scientific is a functional role that focuses on developing real-time safety critical software in implantable and EME systems. The Firmware Design teams are responsible for design and implementation of this embedded software while the Firmware Verification team is responsible for verifying that the software meets its requirements. In addition to developing firmware, this organization also develops and maintains complex tools used to test software and firmware applications in Boston Scientific products.

Your responsibilities will include:



  • Leadership: develop and execute strategies to create high performing functional teams; establish team goals to support overall business goals; lead functional managers through mentoring, talent development/retention and performance management.
  • High Quality Product Development: utilize appropriate processes and development methodologies to create high quality medical devices efficiently; define and maintain firmware requirements, design and test assets; develop and drive quality and productivity improvement initiatives; sustain existing product lines.
  • Communication: communicate effectively with senior leadership, direct reports, your organization, and cross-functional partners including Marketing, Regulatory, Clinicals, Patient Safety and Quality; effectively communicate across multiple divisions.
  • Strategic Influence: develop and drive strategies that contribute to and align with strategic plans in multiple Boston Scientific businesses, utilizing a variety of inputs including patient and clinician needs, post-market experiences, technology advancements such as artificial intelligence, and market opportunities; also develop strategies for effectively using a global workforce.



Required qualifications:



  • 12+ years of relevant work experience with bachelor's degree in engineering field or 10+ years of relevant work experience with master's degree
  • 5+ years in a formal leadership position within R&D
  • Extensive medical device product development experience
  • Knowledge of project management and software engineering disciplines, working together in a matrix organization
  • Experience using Agile development methodologies
  • Proven attributes and skills in the areas of leadership, people development, product development, collaboration, communication and strategic influence



Preferred qualifications:



  • Experience leading global engineering teams, including both captive and outsourced resources
  • Experience using artificial intelligence to drive product innovation and productivity improvements
  • Experience architecting new platforms for firmware development, including knowledge of microprocessor technology and evolving communication options such as Bluetooth Low Energy
  • Experience in all aspects of cybersecurity in product design; including architecting, implementing, testing and maintaining products from a security and privacy perspective

The anticipated compensation listed above and the value of core and optional employee benefits offered by Boston Scientific (BSC) - see www.bscbenefitsconnect.com--will vary based on actual location of the position and other pertinent factors considered in determining actual compensation for the role. Compensation will be commensurate with demonstrable level of experience and training, pertinent education including licensure and certifications, among other relevant business or organizational needs. At BSC, it is not typical for an individual to be hired near the bottom or top of the anticipated salary range listed above.

Compensation for non-exempt (hourly), non-sales roles may also include variable compensation from time to time (e.g., any overtime and shift differential) and annual bonus target (subject to plan eligibility and other requirements).
