Summary
Under the direction of the Support Services Manager and within established organizational and departmental policies and procedures, responsible for performing a variety of duties, including transporting patients, and sorting, processing, and delivering mail and packages. This position is part of the 1199SEIU Bargaining Unit at Cooley Dickinson Hospital. Availability to work weekends, and holidays required Must be able to effectively interact appropriately to an individual's intellectual level and physical ability. 1Infants1Pediatric1Adolescent1Adult1Geriatric Does this position require Patient Care? Yes Essential Functions -Use proper body mechanics to transport patients and equipment to all areas of the hospital. Transport and lift bodies into the morgue. -Transport blood to the floors as requested. -With, or without, nursing personnel, transfer patients onto and/or off beds, wheelchairs, and stretchers during patient transport. -Change oxygen tanks and maintain proper number of oxygen tanks in each unit. -Ensure proper IV positioning; make minor body adjustments and reset IV accordingly during patient transport. -Monitor patients requiring one to one observation, reporting change(s) in conditions and needs, and care as supervisor indicates. -Respond to security and life safety issues as needed. -Process incoming and outgoing mail and packages using a variety of delivery companies including, but not limited to, United States Postal Service, United Parcel Service and Federal Express. -Process and track packages using UPS computer. -Process outgoing letters using an automated mailing machine. Maintain related records and track charges by printing reports. -Prepare special mailings with Postal Service; i.e. First Class, Pre-sort and Third-Class Bulk Mailings. Complete necessary forms, sort and set up mailing for proper classification. -Sort interoffice memoranda and doctor's reports and distribute them to the proper locations. -*Perform the following tasks as necessary under the direction of the assigned nurse to maintain patient comfort and safety: oFalls prevention oAssist to place patient's extremities back into bed as needed oRemove clutter or items within patient's reach oOffer assistance with toileting oAssist patient to walk if independent in ambulation oOffer food and fluids oAssist health care team members with turning and repositioning while maintaining patient privacy and dignity. -*Patient Observer: (as needed) oRemain in constant attendance with assigned high risk patient until relieved by assigned member of the healthcare team. oMaintain safety for patients with suicidal ideation. oObtain assistance from healthcare team with any restrained patient who needs attention or assistance. oImmediately report any change in the patient's condition to the patient's nurse. -Recognize when/how to call 44 for help -Interact with patient as directed by the patient's nurse. Activities may include reading or talking to the patient, or playing cards -Document patient status and interactions on required form per hospital policy. -*The following responsibilities will require assistance from a trained member of the healthcare team: oApplication and ongoing assessment of restraints (If restraints are in use, PCO will notify healthcare team if restraints become too loose or too tight or if patient requires further help) oUse of assistive devices oUse of lift equipment oFeeding patient with high risk of aspiration -Adhere to strict confidentiality guidelines. -Maintain established hospital and departmental policies and procedures, objectives, confidentiality, quality improvement program, compliance, safety, infection control, and environmental standards. -Maintain professional growth and development through attendance at seminars, workshops, conferences or in-services, professional affiliations, or journals to stay abreast of current trends in field of expertise. -Meet annual competency and retraining requirements. -Attend meetings as required.
