As a Staff Software Engineer in our Engineering Effectiveness team, you'll be a key player in shaping Grainger's engineering culture. You'll partner with teams to improve delivery speed and quality, promote sustainable practices, and influence both product and platform decisions across the engineering landscape.

This role is designed for engineers who thrive on elevating others. You'll lead by example, help reduce complexity, and introduce smarter defaults that improve how our teams design, build, and ship software every day.

You Will:

  • Collaborate with Product Engineers across the organization to understand and remove friction in the development experience.

  • Help engineering teams align on best practices, architectural tradeoffs, and technical priorities that accelerate delivery and reduce long-term cost.

  • Design and deliver impactful consulting sessions and immersive 'dojo' experiences to enable product teams to self-solve and scale.

  • Serve as a trusted technical partner through embedded engagements, guiding teams through all phases of the Software Development Lifecycle (SDLC).

  • Influence upstream teams like SRE, Security, and Core Engineering to build shared services that support safer and more resilient delivery.

  • Influence Engineering Effectiveness teams -Delivery Insights, Core Engineering, Developer Experience (DevEx), and AI Enablement-to shape strategy and capability roadmaps.

  • Mentor engineers across teams, supporting their growth not just in technical skills, but also in navigating ambiguity, driving influence, and scaling their impact.

  • Promote continuous improvement by identifying and leading improvements to processes, tooling, and collaboration models that uplift the engineering organization.

You Have:

  • 6+ years of experience in software engineering within large, distributed environments and across multiple teams.

  • Deep empathy for developers and a strong passion for pair programming, coaching, and building inclusive, collaborative team cultures.

  • Full stack engineering experience, with a strong emphasis on Java, React, and NextJS.

  • Practical experience building, deploying, and operating containerized workloads (Docker / Kubernetes), APIs, and microservices at scale.

  • Cloud exposure across UI, API, and CLI (AWS / GCP / Azure).

  • Hands-on experience implementing Infrastructure as Code (e.g., Terraform, Ansible) and CI/CD pipelines aligned to DevOps best practices.

  • Knowledge of cloud-native, event-driven architectures and operational patterns (e.g., Kafka, AWS SQS).

  • Familiarity with observability and monitoring tools such as DataDog, OTEL, Dynatrace, and Splunk.

  • Experience with DevOps and collaboration tools including GitHub, Jira, Confluence, Bitbucket, and Bamboo.

  • A growth mindset and commitment to learning; comfortable with experimentation and evolving engineering practices.
