Job Summary

The firefighter, EMT, AEMT, paramedic and/or nurse is responsible for:

  1. The performance of firefighting, fire prevention, hazardous materials incident mitigation, initial fire investigation, and extrication duties as required by the Department. (Firefighter)
  2. The performance of emergency care as outlined under the Emergency Services Provider License of the Department and its medical control facility. (EMT, AEMT,paramedic or nurse)
  3. Assisting in the maintenance and repair of Department facilities and equipment.

Job Duties

  1. Carry out firefighting, rescue, extrication, salvage, hazardous materials or other emergency duties.
  2. Perform emergency medical care duties within the scope of their license. (EMT, AEMT, paramedic or nurse)
  3. Have a thorough knowledge of and comply with all Department SOG, policies and procedures, SO, Village policies, and supervisor's directions and orders.
  4. Be proficient in the use and maintenance of all tools, equipment, medical supplies and vehicles used by the Department.
  5. Perform cleaning and maintenance of Department facilities and equipment.
  6. Ensure all necessary reports and paperwork are completed in a correct and timely manner.
  7. Comply with the requirements of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).
  8. In the absence of an officer or more senior employee, serve as a crew leader and supervise junior personnel in the performance of their duties both during non-emergency activities and utilizing the incident command system during emergency incidents.
  9. Participate in Department trainings, complete all mandatory trainings, and attend outside classes to enhance skills.
  10. Make periodic inspections of buildings for fire hazards.
  11. Participate in school fire drills and other fire prevention and public relation activities.
  12. Drive and operate Department apparatus to include mini pumpers, vans, cars, ambulances, pickup trucks, and tow trailers.
  13. Maintain effective communications with all levels of the Department.
  14. Order supplies and maintain accurate inventories.
  15. Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

At time of hire:

  1. Be at least 18 years of age
  2. Hold a high school diploma or equivalent
  3. Hold a valid Wisconsin driver's license
  4. Hold State of Wisconsin certification in Firefighter I, or
  5. Be licensed as a State of Wisconsin EMT

  1. Physical Requirements:
    • Standing, walking and sitting
    • Stooping, kneeling, crouching and crawling

    • Lifting, carrying, pushing/pulling: 100 pounds or more
    • Handling, grasping and manipulating fire hose, ladders, performing CPR, utilizing patient lifting devices, etc.

  2. Physical Ability:
    • The Firefighter/AEMT or paramedic must be able to perform these tasks independently.
      • Stamina - vent a roof, pull charged hose line, strip roof with tools, climb stairs with equipment, carry hose up multiple flights.
      • Extent flexibility - roll/pull hose, remove ceiling with poles, push ladder to peak, reach out from ladder, chop with axe, extricate victim, overhaul a burned building, remove building parts.
      • Dynamic flexibility - chop with axe, pick up hose, advance hose, strip roof, perform CPR/chest compressions.
      • Static strength - carry hose, lift/carry victim/patient, move charged hose, lift ladder, move portable generator.
      • Explosive strength - force entry with axe battering ram, raise ladder, run up stairs with equipment, breach walls, pull advance hose, chop with axe to vent roof.
      • Dynamic strength - climb ladders/stairs in full protective clothing (turnout) with equipment, climb aerial ladder.
      • Trunk strength - pull charged hose, perform CPR, pick up equipment at fire, hold hose on fire target, lift victim.
      • Speed limb movement - dodge debris, chop with axe, don SCBA, exit burning building, operate aerial apparatus, perform CPR, operate/drive apparatus.
      • Gross body coordination - climb/descend with victim, advance charged hose line while maintaining flow on target, walk across roof ridge, start/use power saw.
      • Gross body equilibrium - walk on icy roof peak at night, carry patient down stairs, swing axe from ladder.
      • Arm-hand steadiness - operate power tools, connect hose couplings, perform CPR, take blood pressures (BP)/pulse, start an intravenous line, apply traction to limb/neck of victim.
      • Manual dexterity - couple hose, perform CPR, bandage patient, use tools/extrication equipment, use bag-valve ventilator, tie knots, use SCBA.
      • Finger dexterity - use SCBA equipment, tie knots, maintain/open airway, bandage patient, remove object from patient airway with Magill Forceps, tie knots, perform infant CPR.
      • Near vision - read manuals/pump control panel, patient assessment.
      • Far vision - drive to an emergency, visualization of fire conditions, see power lines for safe ladder placement, see addresses.
      • Visual color discrimination - determine fire status/hazards by smoke color, identify labels and placards, assess patient.
      • Hearing - hear call for help in burning building, hear fire crackle in dense smoke, hear BP.
      • Mobility - advance hose line, climb ladder, search/rescue in building, move on roof, get on/off equipment.
      • Effort - chop/vent roof, overhaul burned buildings, advance charged hose line up stairs, climb stairs/ladder, use axe.
  3. Environmental/Working Conditions:
    • Outside workplace environment that is confined.
    • Exposure to extreme cold, hot and normal temperatures.
    • Contact with water and liquids.
    • Exposure to loud noise with a minimum of 90 decibels and vibrations from tools, equipment, machinery, etc.
    • Exposure to hazardous conditions such as: mechanical/electrical, chemical, burns, explosives, heights, physical injury, and fast-moving vehicles.
    • Exposure to atmospheric conditions such as: fumes, gases, noxious odors, dust, poor ventilation.
    • Exposure to blood borne pathogens: blood on self and clothing from emergency medical service (EMS) related calls.

  4. Equipment Used:
    • Calculator, copy machine, computer, fax machine, telephone, two-way radio.
    • Power tools, hand tools, chain saws, shovels, brooms, ladders, exhaust fans, hose and nozzles, and meters/detection equipment.
    • Emergency medical equipment on the ambulance, ambulance cot, stair chair, oxygen, and IV supplies.
    • Car, mini pumper, pickup truck, van, ambulance, lawn mower, and snow blower.
    • Breathing apparatus, hearing and eye protection, firefighting protective equipment clothing, canister/filter breathing mask, and hazardous chemical clothing.
    • Other equipment as required.

Candidate Evaluation Procedure

  1. Applications are scored after receipt based on predetermined values.
  2. Applicants need to submit proof of passing a Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) which was completed within twelve (12) months prior to the application deadline.   3. Applicants shall complete a two-and-a-half hour written exam with a minimum passing score of 70%.
  4. Applicants will participate in an assessment center consisting of multiple exercises.
  5. Applicants successfully completing the assessment center are invited to a formal interview before the Police and Fire Commission (PFC). Based on the interview, the PFC will certify candidates eligible for appointment by the Fire Chief.
  6. Candidates certified by the PFC are added to an unranked eligibility pool.
  7. The Fire Chief may appoint any candidate currently in the eligibility pool (subject to a background check, drug test, medical exam and psychological exam).

Approximately 13-26 hours/week

Shift availability/scheduled hours based on Department needs:

COMPENSATION

Base pay is based on fire certifications and EMT license level. Single certification EMT or Firefighter starts at $17.00 per hour.

Premiums are added to the base pay as follows:

0.25 FTE Rotation Additional $0.50/hour
0.5 FTE Rotation Additional $1.00/hour
Day Shift (0700-1900 CST) Additional $2.00/hour
