Job Description POSITION/JOB TITLE: Assistant Controller DEPARTMENT: Accounting DIRECT SUPERVISOR: Vice President and Controller TRAVEL: Less than 10% POSITION SUMMARY: The purpose of this position is to manage and oversee the organization's External Financial Reporting, Technical Accounting, and Corporate Accounting functions. PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES: EXTERNAL FINANCIAL REPORTING
- Oversee external reporting department and manage the process of preparing SEC regulatory filings (Forms 10-K and 10-Q), including review of compliance with SEC and FASB disclosure requirements, and research and implementation of new accounting pronouncements
- Ensure financial statements are accurate, complete and in compliance with US GAAP
- Partner with financial planning & analysis and investor relations in production of earnings materials; Ensure consistent and accurate investor messaging and manage the compilation of all relevant financial statement attachments. Review and validate investor/analyst presentations to ensure accuracy and consistency with other public information
- Coordinate with subject matter experts (legal, HR, FP&A, investor relations, auditors) to ensure required and pertinent information is included in the MD&A discussion
- Continually review and improve reporting process and controls
TECHNICAL ACCOUNTING
- Provide guidance and expertise to the organization on accounting and controllership issues
- Lead research and determination of appropriate accounting treatment for complex transactions ensuring they are recorded in compliance with US GAAP. Document accounting treatment in memos.
- Proactively communicate the potential impact of transactions to the organization to business leads and senior management (Controller, CFO, FP&A, IR) to ensure all accounting impacts are considered in transactions.
- Liaise with external auditors on all financial reporting and technical accounting matters.
- Research all new accounting and reporting standards issued by FASB and SEC. Determine if new pronouncements impact SunCoke Energy and document treatment and adoption of new standards. Coordinate timelines and necessary changes to business processes with appropriate business leads to accommodate new standards.
- Coordinate with valuation specialists, technical consultants and other subject matter experts on technical accounting matters related to M&A transactions executed by the Company
- Develop and update accounting policies as needed
CORPORATE ACCOUNTING
- Oversee corporate accounting department and ensure monthly, quarterly, and annual close procedures are executed accurately, timely, and in compliance with US GAAP
- Partner with finance, treasury, commercial, operations, internal audit and business unit controllers to resolve accounting questions and ensure new accounting standards, or changes to accounting policies, are implemented across the business
- Assist in the management of the Company's equity compensation plan, including ensuring appropriate accounting under ASC 780 and supporting the preparation and review of the Annual Proxy Statement
- Oversee the accounts payable and payroll accounting functions, ensuring timeliness and accuracy of supplier and payroll payments across the Company
- Support individual plant controllers in the accounting for inventory, including inventory valuation, costing, and inventory survey analysis and related adjustments
- Provide oversight and support for continuous underlying process and controls improvement within our SOX and IT environment

- Ability to research new issues, synthesize information and fact patterns and provide appropriate guidance to organization
- Experience complying with SOX 404

EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS / WORK EXPERIENCE/CERFICACTIONS:
- 9+ years of accounting experience
- Minimum 6 years public accounting firm experience required
- 2 years of corporate accounting experience including financial reporting preferred
- Minimum 2 years of management experience required
- BS degree in Accounting required
- CPA required
- MS degree in Accounting preferred but not required
Base pay $116,000 - $237,287 based on experience.
