About the Role

Tufts Medicine is seeking a dynamic and strategic Director of Executive and Clinical Communications to elevate the voice of our executive leadership and clinical teams across internal and external platforms. This role is responsible for developing and executing a bold, results-driven executive and clinical communications strategy that aligns with the organization's mission and vision while enhancing Tufts Medicine's reputation as a leader in academic and community medicine.

This is a unique opportunity for an experienced communications leader to be at the forefront of evolving how we communicate in the healthcare space-whether through innovative storytelling, new media platforms, or strategic thought leadership initiatives that challenge the status quo. You will collaborate closely with senior leadership, clinical teams, and other key departments to ensure consistent, impactful messaging across all platforms.

The ideal candidate will have deep experience managing communications during high-pressure situations, including crisis and reputation management. The ability to respond quickly, thoughtfully, and strategically to unforeseen challenges will be critical in this role, as will a steady hand and a visionary mindset that can anticipate the communications needs of a complex and fast-paced healthcare environment.

The Director will partner closely with system executives, clinical leaders, researchers, and media to develop compelling narratives, thought leadership strategies, and engagement plans that position Tufts Medicine at the forefront of healthcare innovation and patient care. Success in this role requires a strategic mindset, exceptional storytelling ability, and a deep understanding of healthcare, academic medicine, and clinical communications.

Job Description

Minimum Qualifications:

1. Bachelor's degree in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism or Marketing or other related field.

2. Eight (8) years of management experience in executive and clinical communications.

Preferred Qualifications:

1. Master's degree in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism or Marketing or other related field.

2. Eight (8) of management experience in executive and clinical communications, preferably within a large, complex healthcare system, academic medical center, or research-driven organization.

1. Develops and executes a comprehensive executive and clinical communications strategy that aligns with Tufts Medicine's mission, vision, and strategic priorities.

2. Serves as a trusted advisor to senior executives, crafting high-impact speeches, presentations, thought leadership articles, and op-eds that reinforce Tufts Medicine's industry leadership.

3. Leads executive visibility efforts, securing speaking engagements, interviews, and media placements that amplify the voices of Tufts Medicine's leadership and clinical experts.

4. Develops internal communications strategies that enhance engagement, transparency, and alignment across clinical and administrative teams.

5. Cultivates relationships with influencers and key stakeholders to enhance the visibility of Tufts Medicine's clinical and academic expertise regionally and nationally.

6. Oversees clinical storytelling initiatives, ensuring the impactful communication of research breakthroughs, patient care innovations, and healthcare advancements.

7. Partners with marketing, media relations, philanthropy, research, government affairs, and advocacy teams to integrate messaging and maximize the impact of communications efforts.

8. Supports crisis communications efforts, ensuring proactive planning and rapid response strategies to protect and strengthen Tufts Medicine's reputation.

9. Utilizes data-driven insights and key performance indicators (KPIs) to measure communication effectiveness and refine messaging strategies.

10. Leverages project management tools and Agile methodology to ensure efficiency, adaptability, and continuous improvement in communication workflows.

Physical Requirements:

1. This is largely a sedentary role, which involves sitting most of the time, but may involve movements such as walking, standing, reaching, ascending/descending stairs, and operating office equipment.

2. Frequently required to speak, hear, communicate, and exchange information.

3. Ability to see and read computer displays, read fine print, and/or normal type size print and distinguish letters, numbers and symbols.

4. Requires manual dexterity using fine hand manipulation to operate computer keyboard.

Skills & Abilities:

1. Proven success in leading high-profile executive communications and clinical storytelling initiatives.

2. Strong relationships with national media outlets, healthcare publications, and industry influencers.

3. Exceptional writing, editing, and presentation skills with the ability to translate complex medical and scientific topics into compelling, accessible narratives.

4. Experience advising and influencing senior leadership, with a demonstrated ability to shape messaging at the highest levels.

5. Expertise in healthcare, academic medicine, research communications, and public relations.

6. Entrepreneurial mindset-able to bring creative, disruptive thinking to how Tufts Medicine communicates in an evolving healthcare landscape.

7. Experience managing high-performing teams and fostering a culture of collaboration, accountability, and results.

8. Proficiency in project management systems and Agile methodology, ensuring communications initiatives are efficient, iterative, and results-driven.

Job Profile Summary

This role focuses on the marketing activities of the organization, including promoting and marketing healthcare services to the community and supporting business growth by disseminating information that promotes a favorable view of the organization. In addition, this role focuses on performing the following Marketing Leadership duties: Controls, directs, and participates in the activities of the organization through a hierarchy of managers and supervisors. Responsibilities also include long-term strategic planning, determining the policies of the organization, and allocating its resources and making decisions regarding organization growth and diversification to accomplish entity's vision. A management role that supervises employees focusing on tactical, operational activities within a specified area, with the majority of time spent overseeing area of responsibility, planning, prioritizing and/or directing the responsibilities of employees. Goal achievement is typically accomplished through performance of direct and/or indirect reports. A role that manages experienced professionals who exercise latitude and independence in assignments. Responsibilities typically include: policy and strategy implementation for short-term results (1 year or less), problems faced are difficult to moderately complex, and influences others outside of own job area regarding policies, practices and procedures.
