Essential Job Responsibilities:

The Staff Accountant assists with the preparation of the month-end close process and in producing high quality financial statements and analysis.



  • Responsible for daily banking journals and cash reports for multiple bank accounts for Homeport Insurance.
  • Records losses paid and incurred for the period as reported from system reports in the general ledger.
  • Records and reconciles earned premium (for direct and assumed insurance policies) for the period.
  • Records monthly accounting journals for period activity.
  • Reconciles various balance sheet accounts in a timely manner.
  • Records and balances monthly cash and investment positions.
  • Reconciles financial discrepancies by collecting and analyzing account information.
  • Prepares general ledger and Intercompany reporting.
  • Prepares month-end packages for claims managers and executives
  • Responsible for balancing and reporting amounts paid and incurred to the Department of Labor an annual basis
  • Prepares statutory reports for various regulatory agencies, assists in the preparation of the annual audited financial statements, including preparing audit schedules and responding to auditor requests.
  • Responds to users within the Origami system to the following requests: running monthly scheduled and ad hoc reports as needed, voiding and clearing checks and doing research on payments as requests come through.
  • Reviews, investigates, and corrects errors and inconsistencies in financial entries, documents, and reports.
  • Performs account payable functions in addition to processing payments to outside vendors and loss payments, and accounts receivable for premium receivable.
  • Assists in internal control design reviews and implementation.
  • Assists in preparation of data and analysis for annual management presentations and other ad hoc presentations as needed.
  • Assists in data analysis for setting annual premium rates for various policy holders.
  • Assists in oversight of administration of the Origami system.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance or a related field.
  • 2 years of experience in accounting, finance or a related field.
  • Strong MS Excel skills including pivot table experience.
  • Strong analytical skills and high attention to detail.
  • Excellent computer skills.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.


Work Environment:



  • Exposure to computer screens.
  • The noise level in work environment is usually moderate.
  • Required hybrid work schedule, at least 3 days/week in office.
  • Required job duties are performed in a professional office environment.
