The R&D Staff Chemist will work extensively in the Building Products, Energy, and General Finishing market segments, supporting Powder coating technologies. This role requires close collaboration with Marketing, Sales, and end customers to advance technologies and meet product performance and warranty expectations. Job duties include contact with other employees and access confidential and proprietary information and/or other items of value, and such access may be supervised or unsupervised. - Communicating effectively and promptly with managers, customers, and vendors, and other stakeholders. This included formal and informal presentations as needed.
- Analyzing data to identify trends, resolve customer issues and assess information for project advancement.
- Leading technically complex projects or multiple simpler projects with minimal supervisor input.
- Establishing timelines and identifying resource needs to support project work.
- Strong knowledge of powder coatings formulation and manufacturing methodology including TGIC / HAA / Hybrid technology types.
- Apply specialized knowledge/skills with polymers, adhesion, raw materials, instrumentation, extrusion, additives, and substrates to develop superior performance coatings and perform root cause analysis when problems arise.
- May directly work with and mentor chemists and technicians to support team project goals.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
- Must be legally authorized to work in the country for which you are applying for employment (without now or in the future needing sponsorship for employment work visa and/or permanent residence status).
- Bachelor's degree in a Science, Technology, Engineering or Math field.
- Minimum of 7 years in powder coatings research and/or development, or combination of R&D and manufacturing/engineering experience.
- Understands powder extrusion and dispersion.
- Experience in formulating powder coatings for outdoor applications, single and two-coat systems
- Expertise regarding adhesion and corrosion of coatings on metal substrates
- Full-scale manufacturing experience in both powder coatings and application.
- Familiarity with color matching theory and instrumentation
- Understands instrumentation and standard methods needed to quantify behavior of powder coatings/ polymers.
- History of mentoring others
- Must be able, with or without reasonable accommodation, to determine the difference between colors so you can correctly tint paint to the colors desired by customers.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Advanced Degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or Polymer Science
- 10+ years in powder coatings research and development, or combination of R&D and manufacturing/engineering experience
- Experience in data visualization software to analyze large datasets.
- Experience at designing, executing and analyzing experimental studies to characterize formulation impact on product performance.
- Understands synthesis of polyester and epoxy resins.
- Deep understanding of powder coating raw materials including resins, crosslinkers, pigments, extenders, and performance additives
- Experience with industry certifications relevant to group market segments: AAMA 2603/2604/2605, BHMA, UL 1332, UL 746A/746B, IEEE, ISO 12944, NSF 51/61
