Location: This is a hybrid (virtual/onsite) position with required onsite days on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday assigned to the either the Croton Hydro Plant located in Newaygo, Cadillac Service Center located in Cadillac, Norton Shores Service Center located in Norton Shores, or Parnall located in Jackson. The selected candidate must be within a commutable distance or willing to relocate (relocation package is available for those that qualify).


General Summary of Job Responsibilities

The Senior Civil Engineer will provide design, planning, and oversight for the construction of infrastructure moderately complex projects. These can include renovation and construction of varying structures such as buildings, dams, pipelines, etc. The Senior Civil Engineer will be responsible for ensuring that all projects are completed on time, within budget, and to the highest standards. They will also oversee the work of lower-level engineers and technicians on moderately complex projects.

The Senior Civil Engineer will work in the generation planning hydro and environmental group, serving as civil/infrastructure system owner for dams on the 5 dams located on the Muskegon, Grand and Kalamazoo Rivers. The civil engineer will work with dam safety, project engineering, operations, and electrical and mechanical system owners to ensure the safe operation of assigned river hydro facilities.

Site owner responsible for ensuring assets are operating to meet the safety, reliability, and compliance goals of the company while improving safety, quality, and reliability.Use complex engineering theory to perform detailed engineering calculations, complete in depth field inspections and identify defects, complete detailed cost estimating, prepare and review complex engineering reports and studies, participate in and lead complex problem-solving sessions, and complete detailed review of construction plans and specifications. Serve as project sponsor, communicating between stake holders for assigned projects.Complete safety walk downs and participate in safety meetings, lead safety meetings. Key job duties include:



  • Develop, maintain, and assess systems in accordance with the System Health Assessment

    • This includes associated monitoring, planning preventative maintenance, and identifying negative trends
    • Lead system health discussions


  • Develop detailed and complex strategies and justifications for infrastructure life-cycle management and improve system to ensure safety, compliance, and reliability

    • This includes problem identification; development of solutions; detailed cost estimates, project justification, and timing requirements; providing input to the Financial Planning Processes; and compliance with regulatory requirements (FERC, EGLE, MDNR, others)
    • Workwith other departments to prioritize projects and execute high level project planning


  • Maintaining compliance with Asset Compliance Programs
  • Provide overhaul, refurbishment planning, and shop/field oversight for projects as needed (dependent on current projects)
  • Support Dam Safety projects and regulatory requirements
  • Read, interpret, and implement appropriate regulations
  • Provide support to Operations and Maintenance to help resolve system and equipment problems
  • Manage investigations, consultants, and limited construction projects

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Sets design specifications by computing load and grade requirements, material stress factors, flow rates, and similar parameters
  • Plans projects based on the analysis of relevant materials such as drawings, blueprints, aerial photography, survey reports, maps, and other geologic and topographical data Investigate and resolve project issues in a timely manner
  • Estimates materials, equipment, and labor needed to determine project costs
  • Prepare proposals, reports, specifications, calculations, and other deliverables as required
  • Drafts and presents reports on topics related to projects such as environmental impact statements and right-of-way descriptions that adhere to all local, state, and federal codes and regulations
  • Collaborates with internal coworkers, architects, contractors, surveyors to establish installations or reference points, grades, elevations, and other factors that will affect construction & to ensure projects progress properly
  • Monitors project progress and ensures design specifications, safety, and sanitation standards are met; upon completion of a project, inspects, repairs, and maintains the structures as needed
  • Consults with and provides guidance to project stakeholders and managerial staff regarding engineering requirements for construction of various designs, modifications, and structural repairs
  • Assesses strength of foundations, concrete, asphalt, or steel by testing materials and soil using appropriate methods to ensure safe modifications/building
  • Perform fieldwork and data collection as necessary
  • Uses design software and drawing tools to accurately render and communicate designs; plans and designs other necessary and related systems and structures such as transportation or hydraulics
  • Other duties as assigned or may be necessary

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

  • Thorough understanding of civil engineering principles, practices, and tools
  • Proficient in AutoCAD, Civil 3D, or similar software
  • Thorough understanding of materials, methods, and tools involved in the construction or repair of buildings, pipelines, and other related structures
  • Thorough understanding of safety regulations related to assigned projects
  • Ability to identify and solve complex problems
  • Verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to be both creative and analytical
  • Detail-oriented and accurate

Education/Experience

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited program with four (4) or more years of relevant experience

    • [OR]Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from anon-ABET accredited program plus a Professional Engineering license with four (4) or more years of relevant experience
