The McGraw Hill Higher Education Content Accessibility Team is seeking an experienced, thoughtful, and innovative Content Accessibility Specialist. Join our team in building and remediating content to meet the latest accessibility standards, inclusive design principles, and accessibility best practices. In this role you will work closely with product and platform teams, authors, subject matter experts, vendors, designers, and developers to create digital learning experiences that are accessible, inclusive, seamless, intuitive, and a joy to learn with.

What you will be doing:

  • Demonstrate or develop proficiency in accessibility standards, guidelines, and best practices as they apply to education and digital learning materials (ePub, HTML/CSS/ARIA, accessible documents, custom-coded interactives, etc.). Stay up-to-date on latest best practices in accessibility and disability communities and amend internal guidelines as applicable.
  • Collaborate with product and platform teams, authors, subject matter experts, vendors, designers, and developers to provide guidance on creating accessible content and products. Train and educate internal teams on accessibility best practices and tools.
  • Design and document quality assurance testing plans and processes for new product components.
  • Partner with Digital Platform Group and Product Owners on tool and platform remediation plans. Update authoring guidelines for remediated platforms and tools to ensure clarity and accessible content creation and/or conversion.
  • Model and advocate for accessibility and inclusive design across the organization in every single aspect of work.

We're looking for someone with:

  • Experience building or remediating accessible digital content and familiarity with accessibility standards such as WCAG and Section 508. (Three plus years preferred.)
  • Demonstrable skill at critically analyzing situations from multiple, sometimes competing, viewpoints and providing practical solutions.
  • Willingness to take both initiative and direction.
  • Advanced skills in training and in writing how-to documentation.
  • Solid command of at least two of the following:
    • Accessibility standards such as WCAG and Section 508.
    • Using assistive technologies such as screen readers (e.g. JAWS, NVDA), speech-to-text, and alternate input devices.
    • ePub accessibility techniques.
    • Accessible HTML, CSS, and ARIA.
    • Accessible document formats, such as MS Word, PowerPoint, and PDFs.
    • Instructional design.
    • Universal design for learning.
  • Experience working in Microsoft Office applications, Confluence, JIRA, and Smartsheet; experience conducting user testing with individuals with disabilities and CPACC certification are preferred.
