JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

The Penn State Facilities Engineering Institute (psfei.psu.edu) (PSFEI) is seeking a Technical Writer to manage documents and content for publications for our four main service divisions (education, energy, engineering services, and facility condition assessments) including technical engineering reports, training materials, website content, and other communications for internal and external clients. This is a term appointment funded for three years from the date of hire with an excellent possibility of refunding.

PSFEI is a front-facing unit with a rich tradition of providing facility engineering services since our founding in 1947-we have been proudly serving our clients for over 75 years! PSFEI is part of the College of Engineering at Penn State University Park and touches the lives of thousands of people in all 67 counties of Pennsylvania and across our nation through the facility engineering, education program, facility condition assessment, and energy management services that we provide. Your Role at PSFEI

The Technical Writer plays a vital role in our unit's communications efforts. You will manage day-to-day tasks such as message deployment, content publishing, and platform coordination, while collaborating with cross-functional teams to support broader communications strategies. The ideal candidate brings a passion for communication along with strong organizational skills; attention to detail; and a proactive mindset to produce clear, consistent, and engaging documents and messaging.

Responsibilities include:

  • Reviewing, proofreading, editing, and re-writing documents and content for publication to internal and external clients; driving consistency in communication type, style, format, and quality of content; and ensuring all communication adheres to established unit standards.

  • Determining effective structure and layout for complex reports and collaborating with subject matter experts to translate technical engineering information into easily understandable content.

  • Coordinating with the unit's Education Team to review, edit, format, design, and ensure copyright compliance for PowerPoint slides and instruction manuals created for facility management adult education courses.

  • Assisting in the planning, preparation, and execution of major projects and events by sourcing and obtaining budgetary quotes for items such as display banners and tchotchkes for vendor events, commemorative staff awards, and other special event items as needed, and collaborating with the College of Engineering Communications and Marketing for printed materials.

  • Developing a style guide and creating standardized communication procedures and templates based on industry best practices for technical engineering reports, internal unit forms, questionnaires, surveys, and other messaging.

  • Assisting the unit's Information Technology division with managing document files on SharePoint to ensure records kept are timely, consistently managed, and filed appropriately.

  • Managing the unit's website by consulting with the College of Engineering Communications and Marketing regarding news and content updates.

Education and Experience Requirements

  • This position typically requires a bachelor's degree plus one+ years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Three+ years of work experience is preferred.

Successful candidates in this position are self-motivated; strive to produce high quality, error-free work; can manage competing priorities through prioritization of tasks and activities; and are familiar with engineering disciplines.

Other Requirements Worth Noting

This is a full-time position based at our State College, PA office adjacent to the Penn State University Park campus; however, we are supportive of flexible work arrangements when aligned with the ability to meet the needs of our unit and the essential duties of the position. Questions related to flexible work arrangements should be directed to the hiring manager during the interview process.

This position requires that you operate a motor vehicle as a part of your job duties. A valid driver's license and successful completion of a motor vehicle records check will be required in addition to standard background checks. Security clearances may be required for access to client sites.

The salary range for this position, including all possible grades is:

$61,800.00 - $89,600.00
