OVERVIEW

Merrick is seeking an experienced Senior Mechanical Equipment Engineer to join a multidisciplinary team of engineering and design personnel serving the Nuclear Services & Technology (NST) Business Unit (BU) in our project office in Greenwood Village, CO. This dynamic engineering group specializes in the design of prototype/one-off custom equipment, gloveboxes, hot cells, specialty research equipment and custom-designed, remotely operated mechanisms for handling radioactive and hazardous materials.

The Senior Mechanical Engineer leads a team of engineers and designers within the equipment design group and interfaces and coordinates with other discipline leads (electrical, I&C, structural, and process).

This individual is a degreed mechanical engineer and will execute advanced equipment designs such as hot cell and containment systems (shielded hot cells, gloveboxes, containment hoods), material handling equipment, small-scale process piping & equipment, furnace systems, metal working systems (mills, lathes, rolling machines) and pressure vessels.

Senior Mechanical Engineers are technical leaders and key resources who provide expert consultation in the design, development and implementation of technical products and equipment engineering systems, and they recommend alterations and enhancements to improve the quality of products and/or procedures.


WHAT YOU'LL DO

  • Support development of functional and operational requirements, design criteria, and identification of applicable codes and standards for new design packages
  • Support designs for nuclear facility system upgrades and equipment installations
  • Provide design direction and verification for the design deliverables, which typically include engineering studies, fabrication drawings, detailed equipment sizing & qualification calculations, integration and installation drawings, fabrication and procurement specifications, datasheets, and test plans.
  • Assist in the development of engineering project management plans
  • Assists project managers by tracking task progress (scope, schedule, budget), change management, design issues, and staffing requirements
  • Follow regimented quality assurance/quality control procedures
  • Provide shop support during fabrication and testing

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering from an ABET Accredited Program required.
  • A minimum of twelve (12) years of design engineering experience, including five (5) years of hot cell design, is required.
  • Client projects for this position require US Citizenship.
  • Must have the ability to acquire a security clearance.
  • Ability to work on advanced, complex technical projects or business issues requiring state-of-the-art technical or industry knowledge.
  • Demonstrated advanced design capability of custom equipment including hot cell and glovebox containment systems, development and design verification of design documentation including fabrication drawings, engineering analyses, strength of materials calculations, fabrication and procurement specifications, data sheets and test plans.
  • Strong preference for hot cell design experience.
  • Demonstrated experience with leading mechanical design teams within a complex multi discipline team is essential.
  • Uses advanced techniques in the modification or extension of theories and practices of sciences and disciplines to complete assignments
  • Proficient with 3D design software Creo (formerly ProEngineer) or SolidWorks.
  • Proficient with Mathcad or equivalent calculation software.
  • Professional Engineering License required
  • Previous experience with NRC or DOE projects.
  • Experience with supplier support, factory testing, and field startup required.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Familiarity with NQA-1-2000 quality assurance programs.
