Job Summary

The Center for Inclusive Education and Scholarship (CIES) is seeking a qualified Counselor/ Academic Coach to assist in providing supportive counseling, academic coaching, mentoring, and advising to students participating in Act 101 (The Pennsylvania Higher Education Equal Opportunity Program) to support student success and persistence.

CIES provides comprehensive and integrated academic support, leadership development, and diversity, equity, and inclusion programming to positively impact the retention, persistence, and sense of belonging for students who are first generation college students, low income, or historically underrepresented students of color. Our objective is to empower a community of scholars to pursue academic excellence, civically engage, acquire social and career capital, and develop as global thought leaders. GIES also serves as a student advocate and a catalyst for promoting diversity, inclusion, and cultural competencies for the University. The successful candidate will have a growth mindset and the ability to inspire it in others. This position is fully in-person as it will be meeting with students.

Essential Functions

As Act 101 Counselor:



  • Acts as a mentor, advisor, and role model to Act 101 students.
  • Meets with students regularly to monitor academic progress and personal adjustment, develop plans for success, and provide direct support (e.g., academic coaching).
  • Assists academically underprepared or underperforming students in creating and following programs for improvement.
  • Teaches one course and assists with student support and administrative activities during Dragons Prep, Drexel's academic bridge program.
  • Participates in the recruitment, selection, and training of Peer Mentors for the Dragons Prep program. Assists with supervision when requested by the Associate Director.
  • Publicizes Act 101 program activities to students in a timely and effective manner.
  • Supports annual recruitment process to enroll students in the program.
  • Assists with other aspects of Act 101 program administration as identified by the Executive Director, CIES.


As Academic Coach:



  • Provides academic coaching to Act 101 students for assistance with study skills, time/self-management, procrastination/motivation, test-taking, reading strategies, etc.
  • Markets academic coaching and its benefits to students.
  • Develops improvement plans for students on academic probation and monitors students' compliance and progress.
  • Develops and presents workshops focused on study skills, time management, negotiating University systems.
  • Assists students with navigating University systems (financial aid, class registration, housing processes, etc.) and resources (study abroad, career services, undergraduate research, etc.).
  • Provides outreach to and actively engages with students identified to be at risk for leaving the University for academic or other reasons.
  • Maintains case documentation and prepares weekly records of contacts and other summary reports as requested by the Executive Director.


General:



  • Attend CIES staff meetings.
  • Embodies values of caring and compassion, justice and integrity, competence, and affirmation.
  • Employ holistic approach to student development while empowering students' persistence to graduation.
  • Other duties as assigned.


Required Qualifications



  • Minimum of Bachelor's Degree in sociology, social work, psychology, education, or a related field, or the equivalent combination of education and work experience.

  • Minimum of Minimum of 2 years of experience in academic support, counseling, social work, and/or advising in higher education or high school
  • Interpersonal skills and cultural humility.
  • Ability to relate to students from diverse backgrounds.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks and projects and prioritize based on departmental functionality.
  • Ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Ability to work some evenings and weekends.
  • Ability to work the full duration (M-F) of the Dragon Prep Summer Program beginning at the end of July.

Additional Information
This position is classified as Exempt, grade J. Compensation for this grade ranges from $ 47,490.00 to $ 71,230.00 per year. Please note that the offered rate for this position typically aligns with the minimum to midrange of this grade, but it can vary based on the successful candidate's qualifications and experience, department budget, and an internal equity review.
