Project Design Architect

Primary Responsibilities:

HDR's Project Design Architect will: build awareness of business development activities through engagement with the Director of Sports & Recreation Architecture; take responsibility for design of sports and recreation projects (stadia, arenas, training facilities, etc.), including setting design visions, programming, conceptualization, plan layout, exterior design, documentation, and detailing; research code requirements and ensure feasibility of design solutions; act as an intermediary between the client and the architectural team; work with senior project leadership, including design, project management, and technical architects, to establish owner/client and internal meetings and participate in reviews with various governing agencies for code compliance; independently coordinate within HDR's multidisciplinary team through multiple phases of a project, ensuring that the team is working effectively and keeping to the schedule and budget; conduct work sessions at project site and/or virtually in conjunction with Project Manager, Project Architect and other disciplines; assist Project Manager with the management of project budget, work plan, consultants, and schedule; review architectural documents for areas of conflict with all disciplines; write and edit architectural specifications, and work directly with the owner/client and owner's legal staff to establish and document legal parameters for the construction contract; coordinate with and assist affected disciplines with addenda, RFIs, CPRs and change orders; incorporate agreed-upon changes into project documents; provide construction contract administration as needed; direct the activities of other architectural professionals and provide office leadership including professional development, coaching, and mentoring staff; and perform other duties as needed and requested.

Required Qualifications


  • A Master's Degree in Architecture or a closely related field and 3 years of experience in architecture or a Bachelor's Degree in Architecture or a closely related field and 5 years of experience in architecture.
  • Required experience must include 3 years of design experience with professional or collegiate stadia, arenas, or training facilities, including experience in: site planning for sports and recreation projects; master planning for sports and recreation facilities; exterior design for sports and recreation buildings; and seating bowl, sightline, and concourse design.
  • Must also have experience in: sustainable design; preparation and layout of architectural contract documents and specifications; Autodesk Revit and related tools and processes; AutoCAD; SketchUp or Rhino; Grasshopper and related parametric design tools; Adobe Creative Suite, including Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, After Effects, and Premiere Pro; Newforma; Bluebeam; Enscape, Lumion, V-ray, and Twinmotion; graphic presentation; and Whiteboard collaboration technologies such as Muro, Conceptboard, or Mural.
  • Must hold Architect licensure/registration (from any US jurisdiction).
  • Must hold LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification.
