Job Title: Field Service - Power Generation Technician
Location: Altoona Iowa
Company: Interstate Power Systems The Field Service Power Generation Technician is responsible for the installation, maintenance, repair, and troubleshooting of power generation equipment, with a specialized focus on both diesel engines and electrical systems of generators. This role requires expertise in diagnosing complex mechanical and electrical issues, performing preventive maintenance, and ensuring reliable operation of generators in various field environments. The technician will work independently or as part of a team, providing high-quality service to clients across industrial, commercial, and emergency power applications. Key Responsibilities
- Installation and Commissioning: Install and commission diesel-powered generators, including mechanical setup and electrical connections, ensuring compliance with manufacturer specifications and local codes.
- Maintenance and Repair:
- Perform routine preventive maintenance on diesel engines, including fuel systems, cooling systems, lubrication systems, and exhaust systems.
- Diagnose and repair electrical components such as alternators, control panels, circuit breakers, wiring, and automatic transfer switches (ATS).
- Troubleshoot complex issues in both mechanical and electrical systems using diagnostic tools, schematics, and technical manuals.
- Testing and Calibration: Conduct load bank testing, performance evaluations, and calibration of generator systems to ensure optimal operation and efficiency.
- Emergency Response: Provide rapid response to client emergencies, diagnosing and resolving generator failures to restore power in critical situations.
- Documentation: Maintain accurate service records, including work orders, parts used, and maintenance logs, using digital reporting tools or paper-based systems.
- Customer Support: Communicate effectively with clients to explain technical issues, recommend solutions, and provide training on basic generator operation and maintenance.
- Safety and Compliance: Adhere to all safety protocols, including OSHA regulations, lockout/tagout procedures, and environmental standards, while handling diesel fuel, hazardous materials, and high-voltage systems.
- Inventory Management: Manage and maintain an inventory of spare parts, tools, and equipment required for field service tasks.
Qualifications
- Education: High school diploma or equivalent; technical diploma or associate degree in diesel mechanics, electrical systems, or a related field preferred.
- Experience: Minimum of 3-5 years of experience working with diesel engines and generator electrical systems, preferably in a field service environment.
- Certifications:
- Certification in diesel engine repair (e.g., Cummins, Caterpillar, or equivalent) highly desirable.
- Electrical certifications (e.g., NICET, Journeyman Electrician, or equivalent) or demonstrated proficiency in generator electrical systems.
- OSHA 10/30 certification or equivalent safety training is a plus.
- Technical Skills:
- In-depth knowledge of diesel engine systems, including fuel injection, turbochargers, and governors.
- Proficiency in electrical systems, including AC/DC circuits, three-phase power, and programmable logic controllers (PLCs).
- Familiarity with generator control systems (e.g., Deep Sea, ComAp, or Woodward).
- Ability to read and interpret mechanical blueprints, electrical schematics, and wiring diagrams.
- Experience using diagnostic tools such as multimeters, oscilloscopes, and engine diagnostic software.
- Soft Skills:
- Strong problem-solving and analytical skills to diagnose complex issues under time constraints.
- Excellent communication and customer service skills for interacting with clients and team members.
- Ability to work independently in remote locations and as part of a team when required.
- Physical Requirements:
- Ability to lift heavy equipment (up to 50 lbs), climb ladders, and work in confined spaces.
- Willingness to work in various weather conditions and respond to emergency calls outside regular hours.
- Other Requirements:
- Valid driver's license with a clean driving record; CDL preferred for transporting equipment.
- Willingness to travel regionally or nationally, with potential for overnight stays.
- Availability for on-call rotations, including nights and weekends.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with hybrid power systems or renewable energy integration with diesel generators.
- Knowledge of paralleling switchgear and load-sharing systems for multi-generator setups.
- Familiarity with remote monitoring systems for generators.
- Training in hazardous materials handling or environmental compliance.
Work Environment
- Field-based role with frequent travel to client sites, including industrial facilities, data centers, hospitals, and construction sites.
- Exposure to loud noises, diesel fumes, and high-voltage equipment.
- May require working at heights, in confined spaces, or in adverse weather conditions.
